1963-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-747, DMR-005, this 1963 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime exhibits a repunched mintmark with a D/D South orientation, where the initial D punch was placed south (below) the corrected final position. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is the early die state, Stage B is an unconfirmed mid-die state, and Stage C is an unconfirmed late die state. The southward displacement leaves a secondary D impression visible below the primary mintmark. The D/D South direction provides a distinct diagnostic that separates RPM-003 from RPM-002's D/D Northeast orientation on the same date. The unconfirmed status of Stages B and C indicates that while these die-state progression points are expected, verified specimens have not yet been documented. Struck in 90% silver (0.900 fine), the 1963-D is among the last silver-composition Roosevelt Dimes, as the Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned dimes to copper-nickel clad. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt portrait had been in production for seventeen years by 1963. The complementary directional orientations of RPM-002 and RPM-003 illustrate the range of hand-punching variations at the Denver Mint.
