1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006
Error
Description
Identified as the sixth Doubled Die Obverse for the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-006 carries a particularly useful set of die markers that aid attribution beyond the doubled elements themselves. On the obverse, die scratches form a distinctive X pattern to the right of the Y in LIBERTY, accompanied by additional scratches running SSW/NNE to the right of Lincoln's chin — features that serve as a rapid fingerprint for this specific die even before the collector locates the doubled design elements. On the reverse, E/W scratches appear below AME in AMERICA, providing a secondary confirmation point when examining both sides of a candidate coin. These die markers are important because the 1963-D series contains numerous doubled die varieties that can share similar areas of design involvement, and it is the unique combination of die-specific markers — scratches, gouges, cracks, and polish lines that each die acquires individually during its production life — that ultimately distinguishes one variety from another. The Denver Mint produced 1,774,020,400 Lincoln cents in 1963, a colossal output that demanded rapid die turnover and made hubbing anomalies a near-statistical certainty across the production run. Die markers tend to evolve as the die wears, meaning that early-state and late-state specimens of WDDO-006 may show the same doubled elements but different expressions of the marker scratches — the X pattern near Y may be sharper on early strikes and progressively fainter as die erosion softens the surface. Collectors should use at least 7x magnification for initial screening and higher power to confirm the scratch orientation details. The coin features the standard 95% copper and 5% zinc composition adopted in 1962.
