Description

Past the fifty-variety threshold and still counting, the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-051 continues to demonstrate the extraordinary density of doubled die obverse discoveries for this Denver Mint issue. The variety shows an extra eyelid south of Lincoln's main eyelid — the signature portrait doubling that appears across many entries in the 1963-D DDO catalog. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running east-northeast from the top of the D in GOD and a die scratch running southeast from the brow just above the nose, both of which offer practical screening points for collectors sorting through rolls or dealer boxes. The reverse has no significant die markers noted, which means attribution must rely primarily on the obverse diagnostic features. When reverse markers are absent or insignificant, the obverse die markers become even more critical for confirming the specific WDDO variety, because the doubling pattern alone — an extra eyelid — is shared by numerous varieties and cannot by itself distinguish WDDO-051 from its neighbors.
