1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-049
Error
Description
Exhibiting the familiar extra eyelid south of Lincoln's main eyelid, the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-049 is a doubled die obverse variety whose primary diagnostic lies in the delicate portrait region where even slight hub misalignment produces a clearly visible secondary impression. The obverse die markers include a short, diagonal die gouge just right of the lower 6 in the date — a small but distinct feature that provides an efficient initial screening point when examining coins under magnification. The reverse carries a more elaborate marker set: a light die scratch runs northwest from the upper left first Memorial column to the bottom of the N in UNITED, two parallel die scratches run southeast from the upper right of the second T of STATES to the upper E of STATES, and two parallel die scratches run southeast from the bottom of the L in PLURIBUS to the top of the N in UNUM. This dense network of reverse markers gives the attributor multiple independent confirmation points. Market values have been estimated at approximately one dollar in AU, two dollars in MS60, three dollars in MS63, and five dollars in MS65 — modest premiums that reflect the subtle nature of the variety, though finding a confirmed example still requires considerable searching. Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-049 by the Wexler Team, this variety has no additional cross-references currently known. Denver's production of 1,774,020,400 cents in 1963 generated the die volume from which varieties like WDDO-049 emerge.
