Description

Presenting a doubled die profile that combines portrait and motto features, the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-047 shows an extra eyelid south of Lincoln's main eyelid and doubling on the upper right side of the second T in IN GOD WE TRUST. The obverse die markers are distinctive: a small die gouge appearing as a dot can be found to the right of the lower E in WE, and two parallel die scratches run north-northwest to south-southeast in the field to the right of the forehead. These two markers — the dot near WE and the parallel scratches near the forehead — together create a reliable two-point confirmation system for attribution. The reverse carries its own marker set: a short, diagonal die scratch can be found between the lower A and T of STATES, three short parallel die scratches extend east from the lower right of the second A in AMERICA, and a die scratch runs north to south between the N and T of CENT. Market values have been estimated at approximately two dollars in AU, three dollars in MS60, five dollars in MS63, and seven dollars in MS65. Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-047 and attributed by the Wexler Team, this variety has no additional cross-references currently known. Denver produced 1,774,020,400 cents in 1963, and the combination of eyelid doubling and motto doubling on WDDO-047 makes it a satisfying cherry-pick for collectors who know where to look under a 10x loupe.
