1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-045
Error
Description
A variety with multiple diagnostics on both sides of the coin, the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-045 presents an extra eyelid south of Lincoln's main eyelid along with doubling on the upper right side of the second T in IN GOD WE TRUST — two features that together provide a confident identification pathway for the cherry-picker. The obverse die markers reinforce the attribution: a die scratch runs southwest to northeast through the lower right R of TRUST, a die scratch runs southwest from the lower left of the 1 in the date to the vest, and numerous die scratches run southwest to northeast on the bottom right point of the bust. On the reverse, die scratches run north-northwest from the top of the left cornice, a die scratch runs southwest to northeast inside the upper D of UNITED, and a die scratch runs north-northwest from near the right end of the Memorial roof. This variety is cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1963D-1DO-024 and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-045 by the Wexler Team. The Coppercoins cross-reference adds a second independent catalog number, which is valuable for collectors who use multiple attribution systems when building their variety sets. Denver struck 1,774,020,400 cents in 1963, and the wealth of die markers on both the obverse and reverse of WDDO-045 makes it one of the more readily attributable varieties in this extensive catalog. The combination of portrait doubling and motto doubling indicates a hub misalignment that affected a wide area of the obverse design.
