1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-036
Error
Description
Submitted by David Mulberry, the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-036 exhibits doubling inside the upper portion of the numeral 3 in the date — a localized but diagnostically significant displacement that places the secondary image within the tight interior curve of the digit. This type of confined doubling can be challenging to detect without adequate magnification, but it is unmistakable once identified because the secondary contour line inside the 3 has no counterpart in the normal die design. The obverse carries a rich array of die markers: a die scratch runs through the upper 96 in the date, two die scratches run southwest from the middle tip of the 9, a light die clash can be found left of the 1 in the date, and two die scratches run north-northeast from T and Y in LIBERTY. Additional obverse markers include a short horizontal die gouge southeast of the chin, a vertical die scratch to the right of the G of GOD, and a short die scratch behind the upper head well south of the N of IN. The reverse is also notable: a die scratch runs south-southeast from the top of the 10th Memorial bay, large die chips can be found on the 11th and 12th Memorial columns, and the reverse is identified as a doubled die listed in the Wexler files. The variety is cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-036 and attributed by the Wexler Team. Denver produced 1,774,020,400 cents in 1963, and the dense die marker profile on both sides of this variety makes it one of the more readily attributable entries in the 1963-D DDO sequence.
