1963-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-033
ErrorDescription
Submitted by Brian Ribar, WDDO-033 of the 1963-D Lincoln Memorial Cent presents a multifaceted doubled die obverse whose doubling manifests in three distinct areas of the design. A small bar appears under the L in LIBERTY, an extra eyelid can be found south of Lincoln's main eyelid, and possible very slight doubling can be seen to the right of the last T in IN GOD WE TRUST. This combination of indicators — lettering, portrait, and motto — suggests a hub misalignment that affected a broad zone of the obverse rather than being confined to a single focal point. Obverse die markers include a minute die gouge appearing as a dot above the right side of the middle of the central loop of the 6 in the date, a detail that provides a quick initial screening point for collectors working through rolls. On the reverse, a die scratch runs almost horizontally from the lower D in UNITED, and two parallel die scratches run east-northeast from the upper and lower right side of the Memorial base. Additionally, a die scratch curves southwest from the underside of the right Memorial base. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog are currently known. The variety is cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1963-D 1c WDDO-033 and attributed by the Wexler Team. With 1,774,020,400 cents produced at Denver in 1963, the base coin is among the most common in the Lincoln Memorial series, but the specific die markers and doubling profile of WDDO-033 make confirmed examples genuinely scarce. Struck on a 95% copper and 5% zinc planchet, this variety rewards the patient cherry-picker who examines the eye area and LIBERTY under strong magnification. Doubling shows as a small bar under L in LIBERTY and an extra eyelid to the southeast of the main eyelid.
