1963-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Documented as D/D South, the 1963-D Jefferson Nickel WRPM-001 preserves evidence of the Denver Mint's hand-punching process: the D mintmark was initially punched slightly south of its final position, then corrected, leaving a remnant of the first impression visible below the accepted placement. Repunched mintmarks were routine because each working die received its mintmark individually via a hand-held punch and mallet, and precise alignment on every strike was difficult. Obverse die markers include a NNW die scratch along the lower right inside of the G in GOD, another NNW scratch from the lower right inside of the O in GOD, and heavy abrasion on the star between LIBERTY and the date. Reverse markers include a N/S die scratch at the bottom of the right leg of the R in AMERICA, along with heavy abrasions on the elements. These extensive markers — scratches and abrasions across both sides — suggest the die pair experienced significant handling during preparation.
