1963-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-1751 and DMR-008, this 1963-D Jefferson Nickel features a D/D repunched mintmark displaced to the south. The southward displacement indicates the initial D punch landed north of the intended position, with the corrective punch then placed lower to produce the final mint mark location. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at the Denver Mint, the 1963-D belongs to the final pre-SMS era of Jefferson Nickel production, as 1965-67 would see Special Mint Set coins replace both proof and standard mint set offerings. As RPM-002, this is the second most prominent repunched mintmark for the 1963-D date, following the primary RPM-001 in catalog sequence. Die progression documentation tracks the variety across multiple die states. Repunched mintmarks on 1960s Jefferson Nickels represent the continuation of the hand-punching practice that would eventually be superseded when the Mint began incorporating mint marks directly into master dies. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, in production since 1938, provided the standard backdrop against which these mintmark varieties are found.
