Description

Medium-spread doubling on the RTY of LIBERTY, the back of Washington's head, the ribbon, and the 2 of the date distinguishes this ninth cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1962 Washington Silver Quarter. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1859 and DMR-015, this variety is documented across three die stages: Stage A with obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The 1962 quarter was struck at Philadelphia in 90% silver composition — the penultimate year before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in circulating coinage. Doubled die obverses result from misalignment between successive hub impressions during the die-sinking process, where the hub is pressed into the die blank multiple times to transfer the design. When the die or hub shifts slightly between impressions, the resulting die carries overlapping design elements that reproduce on every coin struck. Nine documented DDOs for a single date reflects the intensity of variety research on the Washington silver quarter series. These post-war era quarters represent the final generation of 90% silver circulating coinage, adding both numismatic and bullion-related interest to authenticated die varieties.
