Description

Featuring one of the most dramatic multi-impression effects in the 1962 proof DDO catalog, the Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-039 shows a quadrupled lower left corner on the numeral one in the date — four overlapping images at that single location, signaling multiple hub displacement events affecting the same area of the die. Beyond this quadrupling, the variety also displays strong extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST, plus a spread directed toward the rim on the date and the letters of TRUST. The quadrupled corner of the one is the standout feature: on proof surfaces created by the Philadelphia Mint's polished dies operating under elevated pressure, the four overlapping impressions resolve with remarkable clarity against the mirror-finish background. Each successive impression appears as a thin stepped outline radiating outward from the primary device, creating a cascading serif effect that is visible under 10x to 16x magnification. The combination of localized quadrupling at one point and strong generalized thickening across broad inscription zones makes this one of the more complex doubled die obverse varieties for the date, suggesting that the working die received multiple imperfect hub impressions whose cumulative effect produced the quadrupled detail. On the obverse, a very short diagonal die scratch extends from the rim above the O in GOD. No significant reverse die markers have been documented. This entry represents the proof-specific filing for WDDO-039, distinct from any non-proof counterpart. It was struck as part of the 1962 proof production of 3,218,019 sets, with each proof die typically serving approximately 3,000 strikes before retirement — the final proof issue in the original 95% copper alloy composition.
