Description

Filed as the proof-specific listing for the WDDO-028 designation, this 1962 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent entry represents a separate die from the non-proof WDDO-028 record enriched in a prior batch — both carry the same catalog number but exist as distinct database entries because they were struck from different working dies under different production conditions. The proof version exhibits a strong Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 10 o'clock, with the resulting displacement visible on the date and the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Class V in the Wexler classification system designates pivoted hub doubling, where the working hub rotated around an off-center axis during die production. With the pivot near 10 o'clock in the upper-left quadrant, design elements in the lower-right and center of the obverse received the greatest angular displacement, explaining the prominent involvement of both the date and the motto. The proof striking environment at the Philadelphia Mint renders this Class V spread against mirror-like fields, where the contrast between the frosted design elements and the reflective background can make the rotational doubling either strikingly obvious or surprisingly elusive depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge positioned left of the lower first T in TRUST and a die gouge on Lincoln's neck south of the ear. No significant reverse die markers have been noted.
