1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-041
Error
Description
Boasting an unusually thorough set of cross-references, the 1962 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-041 is documented across three major variety cataloging systems: the Wexler Variety ID 1962 1c Pr WDDO-041, CONECA designation 9-O-V, and the Coppercoins reference 1962P-1DO-002P. This triple-source documentation reflects the variety's significance within the 1962 proof DDO population and provides collectors with multiple independent verification resources. The doubling manifests as a strong Class V clockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 9 o'clock, affecting the date, Lincoln's eyelid, and the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. Class V in the Wexler system designates pivoted hub doubling, where the working hub rotated around an off-center axis during die production. With the pivot near 9 o'clock — at the left rim — design elements on the right side and in the portrait zone received the greatest angular displacement, explaining the prominent involvement of the date, the eyelid, and the TRUST letters. Obverse die markers include short vertical scratches right of the bottom of the S in TRUST. On the reverse, a die scratch runs south down the bottom of the first Memorial column into the left side of the Memorial base. This variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the 1962 proof production of 3,218,019 sets, representing the final proof Lincoln cent issue in the original 95% copper, 5% tin-and-zinc alloy composition. The eyelid doubling provides a particularly satisfying attribution point on proof surfaces, where the mirror fields surrounding Lincoln's portrait create exceptional contrast against the fine doubled line of the secondary eyelid.
