Description

Previously cataloged as WDDO-057, this 1962 Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die obverse variety was reassigned to WDDO-047 after researchers identified four different doubled working hubs used during 1962 cent die production — a landmark discovery that necessitated a comprehensive reorganization of the entire WDDO catalog for this date. Under its current designation, WDDO-047 displays strong extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST, indicating that the hub-level displacement was substantial enough to impart a broadly distributed secondary impression across three major inscription zones. The "strong" intensity classification places this variety in the upper tier of visual prominence among 1962 WDDO entries, with the displaced images clearly resolvable under standard magnification without requiring specialized lighting techniques. The variety carries the Wexler Variety ID 1962 1c WDDO-047, with no additional cross-references currently known. Obverse die markers include nearly vertical scratches to the right of Lincoln's bowtie and scratches running north-northwest to south-southeast to the left of the back of Lincoln's neck. On the reverse, a die scratch extends southeast from the upper right of the M in UNUM, passing through the right dot between UNUM and the next word, and numerous northwest-southeast scratches traverse the Memorial area. This variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a regular business-strike issue during the final year of the original 95% copper, 5% tin-and-zinc alloy, when over 606 million Lincoln cents were produced from obverse dies designed by Victor David Brenner.
