1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-032
ErrorDescription
Reassigned from its former designation as WDDO-071, the 1962 Lincoln Memorial Cent WDDO-032 received its current catalog number following the pivotal discovery that four different doubled working hubs were employed during the production of 1962 cent dies. That finding prompted a systematic renumbering of the WDDO series, reclassifying varieties according to their working hub lineage and eliminating the prior sequential numbering that had obscured the familial relationships between hub-sibling varieties. Under its current attribution, WDDO-032 exhibits extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, a broadly distributed effect consistent with a hub-level displacement that imparted a slight secondary impression across the inscription. The variety carries the Wexler Variety ID 1962 1c WDDO-032, with no additional cross-references currently known. Obverse die markers provide the critical identification points that separate this variety from other WDDO entries showing similar LIBERTY thickening: a die scratch runs from southwest to northeast between the upper G and O in GOD, and another die scratch extends southwest from the bottom of the first T in IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, a die scratch oriented northwest-southeast lies between the upper left dot and the P in PLURIBUS, accompanied by numerous scratches running northwest-southeast above the right side of the Memorial roof. These die-specific features serve as fingerprints that uniquely identify the individual die from which WDDO-032 was struck, making them essential for accurate attribution within the hub-family grouping. The variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a business-strike issue during the final year of the original copper alloy composition.
