Description

Representing one of the most visually compelling proof doubled die obverse varieties in the 1962 Lincoln Memorial Cent catalog, WDDO-030 exhibits a strong Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 9 o'clock, producing bold doubling across an unusually wide array of design elements — the date, Lincoln's eyelid, the lower nose, the lips, and the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST. This variety was formerly listed under a different WDDO designation before being reassigned during the comprehensive renumbering that followed the identification of four different doubled working hubs for 1962 cent dies. The Wexler Variety ID is 1962 1c Pr WDDO-030, with no additional cross-references currently known. In the Wexler classification, Class V designates pivoted hub doubling in which the working hub rotated around an off-center axis, and the counterclockwise direction means the secondary impression trails in the counterclockwise direction relative to each affected element. With the pivot near 9 o'clock — at the left rim — design elements on the right side and center of the obverse received the greatest displacement, explaining why the doubling extends from the date at the lower right all the way through the facial features to the motto at the upper right. On the obverse, die markers include a die gouge east of the bottom of the ear and a short vertical die scratch between the lower R and U in TRUST. The reverse carries a die gouge appearing as a dot south of the right A in STATES and another dot-like gouge left of the lower I in UNITED. This proof variety was struck at the Philadelphia Mint during 1962, when 3,218,019 proof sets were produced in the final year of the original 95% copper alloy composition.
