1962 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-024

Description

Presenting one of the more anatomically distinctive doubled die obverse varieties in the 1962 Lincoln Memorial Cent series, WDDO-024 is best identified by a secondary eyelid that appears below Lincoln's normal eyelid — a feature that immediately catches the eye of experienced variety hunters working under magnification. Beyond the portrait, doubling also manifests at the top of the vertical bar of the L in LIBERTY and on the upper right portion of the second T in IN GOD WE TRUST, providing two inscription-based confirmation points that corroborate the eyelid finding. The variety carries the Wexler Variety ID 1962 1c WDDO-024, with no other cross-references currently known. Struck as a business-strike issue at the Philadelphia Mint during 1962 — the final year the Lincoln cent was produced in its original 95% copper, 5% tin-and-zinc alloy — this variety emerged from a production run exceeding 606 million pieces designed by Victor David Brenner on the obverse and Frank Gasparro on the reverse. Die markers on the obverse include scratches running east-southeast from the chin and north-south scratches visible on both sides of the bust. The reverse carries a strong die gouge extending from the lower left of the fifth Memorial column, additional die gouges in the lower second and third bays, and a die gouge positioned above the left cornice and above the left end of the roof. These reverse markers are particularly useful for preliminary screening, as the strong gouge at the fifth column can be spotted at relatively low magnification before the collector undertakes the more demanding examination of the obverse doubling features. An extra eyelid can be found below the normal eyelid. Die Markers: Obverse: Several die scratches run ESE from the chin. Numerous die scratches run N/S on both sides of the bust.
