1962 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-034

Description

Transitioning from business strikes to the proof production line, the 1962 Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent DDO-034 carries a light spread confined to the date numerals. Proof cents of this vintage were struck at the Philadelphia Mint from specially prepared dies on polished planchets, receiving multiple impressions at higher striking pressure to produce the mirror-like fields and sharply frosted devices that define the format. The 1962 proof mintage of 3,218,019 pieces required a substantial number of proof die pairs, and since the average working life of a Lincoln cent proof die is estimated at roughly 3,000 impressions, the Mint cycled through approximately one thousand or more obverse dies during the proof production run — each one a candidate for hub doubling if its working hub carried a secondary impression. DDO-034 is identified by catalog markers UVC-2065 and DMR-058. The proof surface paradoxically both aids and complicates detection of light doubling: the brilliant mirror finish provides exceptional contrast that can reveal the faintest secondary outlines on the date digits, yet the same reflectivity can create distracting light play that mimics doubling artifacts when the coin is tilted under a lamp. Collectors should examine the date under diffused lighting at 10x to 16x magnification, looking for consistent secondary images on the 1, 9, 6, and 2 that shift in unison with the coin rather than appearing and disappearing as the viewing angle changes.
