1962-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-1024 and DMR-011, DDR-004 on the 1962-D Washington silver quarter exhibits light spread on the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF and E PLURIBUS UNUM — the reverse lettering elements where hub doubling most commonly manifests on John Flanagan's heraldic eagle design. The 1962-D quarter was struck in the original 90% silver composition that would be discontinued after 1964 due to the nationwide silver shortage, giving this variety added appeal among collectors who value both the metallic content and the die anomaly. Three die stages document the progressive deterioration of this die pair: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows the reverse at mid-die state with a die crack extending across the bust and into the ribbon, and Stage C at late die state is also unconfirmed. The MDS die crack across the bust into the ribbon provides a helpful staging marker — its presence or absence allows collectors to identify which production window their specimen represents. Denver struck over 127 million quarters in 1962, an enormous output that preceded the clad transition by just two years.
