1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1961 Washington Quarter WDDO-002 shows spread directed toward the rim on IN GOD WE TRUST. The obverse presents an active die surface with scratches running southwest from the neck to the right of the motto, additional scratches angled southwest to northeast to the right of the bust, and numerous other scratches distributed throughout. The reverse is similarly marked, with short vertical die scratches between the first T and A in STATES along with other scattered scratches. This regular strike variety's rim-directed doubling on the motto represents an outward displacement pattern during the hubbing process. The abundance of die scratches across both sides, while not directly related to the doubling event, provides a wealth of secondary diagnostics for confirming the specific die pairing. Collectors should focus first on the IN GOD WE TRUST inscription for the primary doubled die attribution before using the extensive scratch network as supporting evidence for this particular 1961 quarter die.
