Description

Produced at Philadelphia as a proof striking, this 1961 Washington Quarter carries WDDO-005 designation for its southward spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. The Wexler Team attributed it under Wexler Variety ID 1961 25¢ Pr WDDO-005, noting that while the obverse lacks significant die markers, the paired reverse die is itself a doubled die cataloged as 1961 25¢ Pr WDDR-003. That companion reverse shows a very close spread toward the center on branch ends and lower serifs of QUARTER DOLLAR, along with a die gouge to the left of the upper A in QUARTER. The pairing of two doubled dies within a single die marriage makes this especially noteworthy, as both sides exhibit attributable hub doubling from separate die-sinking events. The southward directionality on obverse inscriptions provides a clear diagnostic, while the dual doubled die nature elevates this variety's significance within the 1961 proof quarter roster. Collectors should examine both sides carefully to confirm the complete die marriage.
