1961 VDDO VDDO-022
Error
Description
Showing medium counter-clockwise spread on the upper LI of LIBERTY, the 1961 VDDO-022 Franklin half dollar demonstrates hub doubling concentrated in the legend area above Franklin's portrait. The affected letters sit at a position where rotational displacement produces visible separation between the primary and secondary images, while the remainder of LIBERTY may show progressively less doubling as the distance from the spread's apex decreases. Die stage documentation records three states: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). Franklin half dollar doubled die obverses are collected as part of a series that ran only from 1948 through 1963, giving the denomination a compact date range that encourages complete variety sets. The VDDO designation indicates this variety was cataloged at the hub level by VarietyVista's classification system. Collectors examining this variety should focus on the upper portions of the L and I in LIBERTY, where the secondary image creates a visible thickening or notch along the letter profiles.
