1961 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009
Error
Description
Recorded as the ninth doubled die obverse for the 1961 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDO-009 is a regular-strike variety that documents another instance of hub misregistration during the die-making process at the Philadelphia Mint. The multi-impression hubbing method used throughout this period required that a master hub be pressed into each working die several times to transfer the full depth and detail of Victor David Brenner's obverse design, and any deviation in alignment between those impressions resulted in overlapping images being embedded permanently into the die face. The 1961 date occupies an early position within the Memorial reverse era that began in 1959, and the transition period saw a notable concentration of doubled die varieties across all three operating mints. As a Philadelphia product, this cent bears no mintmark. While detailed die markers and cross-references to CONECA or other cataloging systems have not been published for WDDO-009, the doubled die obverse classification confirms that examination of the obverse inscriptions, portrait, and date under magnification will reveal characteristic doubled impressions. The variety's position as one of thirteen documented 1961 DDOs underscores the frequency with which hubbing anomalies occurred during high-volume cent production in the early 1960s.
