1961 Variety WWHO-003
ErrorDescription
The most broadly visible of the three documented 1961 Lincoln Memorial Cent Working Working Hub Obverse varieties, WWHO-003 manifests as strong extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST — the three principal obverse inscriptions. Rather than appearing as a cleanly separated secondary image, the "extra thickness" characterization describes a doubling so closely overlapping that it widens the apparent stroke width of each letter and numeral, giving them a bolder, heavier appearance than the Mint intended. This effect originates at the working hub level: the master die impressed the working hub with a very slight misregistration, and the resulting thickened design was then propagated to every working die produced from that hub. Because Working Working Hub Obverse (WWHO) doubling is embedded in the hub itself, it can appear across multiple die pairs — each with its own unique die markers on both obverse and reverse, which will vary among individual working dies. Notably, WWHO-003 is cross-referenced in the entry for 1961 Proof WDDR-023, where the obverse of a specific Proof die pair exhibits this same hub-level doubling alongside a reverse doubled die. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1961 1¢ WWHO-003 with no other known cross-references, this variety applies to the regular-strike Philadelphia Mint production and represents the strongest expression of hub doubling documented for the 1961 cent obverse.
