1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-503 in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this 1961-D Washington Quarter RPM-001 displays a D over D repunched to the west — the final D mintmark was punched westward from the initial impression, leaving remnants of the first D visible to the east of the final position. The Fivaz-Stanton listing gives this variety mainstream recognition beyond specialist RPM catalogs, making it one of the more widely known repunched mintmarks in the Washington Quarter series. Westward repunching creates a distinctive overlap pattern where the initial D's vertical stroke appears as a secondary line east of the final D's right edge, and the initial impression's curves show as extra contour along the eastern side of the letter. The 1961-D was struck at Denver during the penultimate era of silver Washington Quarters — just three years before the 1965 transition to copper-nickel clad composition ended silver coinage for circulating quarters. Struck on 90% silver at 24.3mm, Flanagan's Washington portrait was in its thirtieth year. FS-listed repunched mintmarks attract cherry-picking collectors who search rolls and bags of silver quarters for identifiable varieties, and the western displacement of this RPM makes it detectable with moderate magnification. Look for the remnant first D impression displaced eastward from the final position.
