1961-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

Attributed as 1961-D 25¢ WRPM-005 by the Wexler Team, this Denver Washington quarter shows a tilted or rotated D mintmark (D/D Tilted/Rotated) with extensive die markers across two documented stages. In Stage A, die scratches run between the T and Y in LIBERTY, a die scratch extends north-northeast from the bottom of the E in LIBERTY, and on the reverse a die scratch appears above UA in QUARTER with another above the mintmark between the leaves. By Stage B, a die gouge dot has developed to the right of the bottom of the L in LIBERTY while the E scratch persists, and on the reverse a die crack descends down the outside of the eagle's right wing, two die gouges point northeast from the top of the D in UNITED, and a small die gouge dot sits to the left of the eagle's neck. The tilted repunching indicates the mintmark punch was angled differently between impressions. Washington silver quarters from 1961 were struck in 90% silver with substantial Denver mintage. The LIBERTY area scratches combined with the eagle's wing crack in Stage B provide a diagnostic pathway for field attribution.
