Description

This proof Franklin Half Dollar carries an extremely close spread directed toward center on IN GOD WE TRUST, with the doubling intensity decreasing from left to right across the motto. The tight spread toward center produces extra thickness that requires careful examination under magnification to distinguish from strike doubling. Die markers include die gouges inside the lower U and upper D of UNITED, providing reliable attribution diagnostics on the reverse. This is a replacement listing — the original WDDO-013 proved to be a working die from the doubled working hub, and this new variety was subsequently assigned the same catalog number. Wexler Variety ID: 1960 50¢ Pr WDDO-013. Philadelphia Mint proof production of Franklin Half Dollars in 1960 represents the penultimate year of John Sinnock's design, which would be replaced by the Kennedy Half Dollar following the president's assassination in November 1963. Proof doubled dies on Franklin Halves are actively pursued by specialists who prize the combination of mirror fields with visible hub doubling on the legends.
