1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019
ErrorDescription
Recording this doubled die reverse under the later hub type introduced partway through Philadelphia's 1960 cent production, WDDR-019 on the Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date regular strike complements its Large Date sibling. The reverse carries a spread towards the center on USA, ONE CENT, the designer's initials, and slightly on EPU — the same four text groups affected on the Large Date version, with the same gradient in doubling intensity that diminishes toward the EPU abbreviation. The centerward displacement indicates a Class II rotational misalignment during the hubbing process, and the inclusion of four reverse text groups provides collectors with multiple areas to examine when confirming the doubled die. On the obverse, die scratches run east-southeast from the neck and chin, serving as the principal die marker for this pairing. No significant reverse markers have been recorded. The Small Date hub is confirmed by examining the date numeral proportions — all four digits present at a uniform height, lacking the taller 1 and lower 0 that characterize the Large Date. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-019 with no other known cross-references, collectors pursuing a comprehensive 1960 DDR set will want both hub variants to fully represent this variety.
