1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014
ErrorDescription
Bearing the same Wexler designation as the Large Date version, WDDR-014 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date regular strike carries a close spread towards the center on the designer's initials and the lower letters in AMERICA. This narrow scope of doubling — limited to the FG initials and the base of the country name — places the diagnostic zone in areas that many cherrypickers examine only as an afterthought, making this a variety that rewards deliberate, methodical reverse scanning. The centerward spread indicates a Class II rotational misalignment during die hubbing, and the displacement is close enough that high magnification is advisable for confirmation. On the obverse, a light die scratch runs from south-southwest to north-northeast to the right of the neck, lips, and chin, paralleling Lincoln's profile and serving as the principal obverse diagnostic. The reverse features a die scratch running from west-southwest to east-northeast just above the statue's head within the Memorial building. The Small Date hub type is confirmed by the characteristically uniform date numeral proportions, where all four digits present at a similar height rather than showing the tall 1 and low 0 of the Large Date. Collectors building a complete 1960 DDR set should acquire both hub variants of WDDR-014 to fully document this doubled die across the year's production.
