1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
ErrorDescription
Presenting a spread towards the center on the designer's initials, UNITED, and ONE CENT, WDDR-012 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date regular strike affects a broader range of reverse text elements than many of the close-spread varieties in this catalog range. The centerward displacement — characteristic of Class II hub doubling — means the secondary impression shifted slightly inward relative to the primary, and this direction of spread can be confirmed by examining the outer edges of the affected letters for the telltale secondary outline. The obverse die is marked by numerous die scratches running mostly north to south to the left and right of Lincoln's bust, creating a vertical pattern of fine lines flanking the portrait that serves as the principal obverse diagnostic. On the reverse, a small die gouge inside the lower C in CENT provides a precise marker conveniently located within the denomination text where the doubling is also most visible. The Small Date attribution places this variety in the later 1960 production phase at the Philadelphia Mint, after the mid-year hub transition. Collectors examining potential WDDR-012 specimens should start by confirming the centerward spread on the three affected text groups, then verify the die markers on both sides to rule out other close-spread DDR varieties in the 1960 catalog.
