Description

Documented under the later Small Date hub type, WDDR-009 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date regular strike carries the same doubled die reverse characteristics as its Large Date counterpart: a close spread on the designer's initials and the lower part of the letters in ONE CENT. The Small Date attribution is confirmed by examining the date numerals, which present at a more uniform height with a compact overall appearance distinct from the Large Date hub's taller 1 digit and lower-sitting 0. The reverse die provides three small die gouges as attribution aids — one above the P in EPU, one to the right of the bottom of the second A in AMERICA, and one to the right of the designer's initials — each positioned near commonly examined reverse elements and therefore relatively easy to locate. On the obverse, die scratches run in multiple directions through the 19 in the date, supplemented by other die scratches scattered throughout the obverse field. These obverse markers confirm the specific die pairing while the reverse gouges and doubling together establish the variety. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDR-009 with no other known cross-references, collectors seeking a comprehensive DDR set should pair this Small Date entry with the Large Date version to fully represent WDDR-009 across both hub variants.
