Description

Among the subtler doubled die reverse varieties documented on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date, WDDR-006 presents a very close spread on the lower part of the letters in ONE CENT. The doubling is confined to the lower portions of the denomination text, requiring collectors to examine the base strokes and serifs of each letter under at least 10x magnification to detect the displaced secondary hub impression. Because the spread is limited to a narrow band across the bottom of ONE CENT, this variety can easily be overlooked by cherrypickers who scan only the upper portions of the reverse legend or the Memorial building itself. The die carries a distinctive set of obverse markers: several die scratches run south-southeast from the underside of Lincoln's chin, and additional die scratches are scattered throughout the obverse, providing multiple confirmation points for attributing this specific working die. On the reverse, a small die gouge can be found to the left of the bottom of the N in CENT, offering a precise secondary diagnostic adjacent to the area where the doubling itself is most visible. The Small Date designation places this variety in the later production phase at the Philadelphia Mint, after the mid-year hub transition that introduced the redesigned date numerals with their characteristically more uniform proportions.
