Description

Exhibiting doubling on the top of the L in LIBERTY, WDDO-019 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date regular strike concentrates its hub doubling in a single diagnostic area that demands focused examination. The top of the L is a relatively narrow zone, and the displaced secondary impression manifests as a slight thickening or shadow along the upper edge of the letter. The obverse die carries several useful markers: a die scratch runs northeast from the bottom left of the L in LIBERTY, several die scratches run from west to east between the vest and the 1 in the date, and a die scratch runs from north-northwest to south-southeast between the 9 and the 6. On the reverse, three short, nearly vertical die gouges can be found at the top right of the C in AMERICA, two die scratches run from north-northeast to south-southwest between the D in UNITED and the first S in STATES, and a die scratch runs from west-southwest to east-northeast through the lower TES in STATES. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDO-019 with no other known cross-references, the Large Date attribution places this die in the earlier production phase at Philadelphia before the mid-year hub change.
