1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-015
ErrorDescription
Sharing the same eyelid-doubling characteristic seen on WDDO-007, WDDO-015 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date manifests its doubling as an extra eyelid below Lincoln's normal eyelid. This form of hub doubling, concentrated in the portrait's facial details rather than across broad legend areas, represents a relatively uncommon diagnostic zone for doubled dies and is easy to overlook without deliberate examination of the eye region. The obverse die carries numerous die scratches running mostly north to south to the right and left of the bust, providing secondary diagnostics that help distinguish this die from other 1960 Large Date varieties exhibiting similar eyelid doubling. On the reverse, parallel die scratches run east to west above the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDO-015 with no other known cross-references, this variety underscores the importance of examining Lincoln's portrait under adequate magnification — collectors who focus exclusively on the legend text and date may miss varieties whose doubling is confined to the sculptural details of the bust.
