1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

One of the more subtle doubled die obverse varieties in the 1960 Philadelphia cent series, WDDO-007 manifests its doubling as an extra eyelid below Lincoln's normal eyelid on the Large Date regular strike. This type of doubling — confined to a small area of the portrait rather than spread across legends or date numerals — requires careful examination under magnification of at least 10x to detect, and collectors who overlook the eye area may miss it entirely. The obverse die carries two strong die gouges running from the northwest to the southeast through the L in LIBERTY, providing a reliable secondary diagnostic for confirming attribution. On the reverse, a die scratch runs southwest from the bottom left of the E in AMERICA. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDO-007 with no other known cross-references, this variety rewards patient examination of Lincoln's facial details — a region that many cherrypickers skip in favor of the more commonly checked motto and date areas.
