Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1c WDDO-005 and cross-referenced as CONECA 10-O-VI, Coppercoins 1960P-1DO-006, and Crawford CDDO-003, this doubled die obverse appears on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date business strike. A Class II spread towards the center is visible on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Two die stages have been documented with distinct markers. Stage A obverse diagnostics include numerous curving die scratches to the right of the upper vest and bowtie, along with numerous curving die scratches to the right of the nose and eye. By Stage B, a die chip has developed in the upper 9 of the date. On the reverse, Stage A shows die scratches curving north-northeast from the upper letters in PLURIBUS and a die chip on the upper E of CENT. By Stage B, the Stage A reverse die scratches have weakened but remain visible. The progression from Stage A to Stage B demonstrates how die wear alters secondary diagnostics while the primary hub doubling persists. The Large Date designation and CONECA 10-O-VI classification confirm this as a Class VI (distorted hub doubling) variety, distinguishing it from the Class II entries that dominate the 1960 DDO roster.
