1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018
Error
Description
Bearing the same Wexler designation as its Small Date counterpart, WDDO-018 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date regular strike shares the characteristic extra horizontal bar below the L of LIBERTY that defines this variety. The Large Date hub was the first obverse design employed at Philadelphia during 1960, and this listing documents the doubling as it appears under that hub type. On the obverse, a die dent extends southeast from the rim well north of the L in LIBERTY, a long die gouge runs through the upper TRU of TRUST, a die scratch extends southeast from the upper part of Lincoln's nose, and a short die scratch extends south from the front of Lincoln's eyelid. The reverse carries two die scratches running south from under the right bottom of the Memorial to the N of CENT, a die scratch extending northeast from the upper right base of the Memorial to the C of AMERICA, a die scratch extending east-northeast from the right cornice to the C of AMERICA, a die scratch running north to south in the 10th Memorial bay, and a small die gouge inside the upper second S of STATES. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDO-018 with no other known cross-references, collectors should verify the Large Date numeral proportions — particularly the taller 1 digit and lower-sitting 0 — to confirm the correct parent attribution before assigning this variety number.
