1960 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009
Error
Description
Featuring a strong clockwise spread on the letters of IN, the G of GOD, and the first T of TRUST, WDDO-009 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date is one of the more readily identifiable doubled die obverse varieties in the series. The clockwise rotational spread is characteristic of Class III hub doubling, where the secondary hub impression was slightly rotated relative to the primary. The obverse die is richly marked: numerous die scratches run from southwest to northeast through the letters of LIBERTY, a die scratch runs from south-southwest to north-northeast to the right of the bottom of the O in GOD, two parallel die scratches run north-northeast from the upper nose, a short die scratch runs north-northwest from the top of the bowtie, and numerous other die scratches are scattered throughout the obverse. The reverse carries several die scratches running from southwest to northeast through the US of PLURIBUS and above the right end of the Memorial roof, a die gouge inside the bottom of the first A in AMERICA, a short vertical die gouge inside the upper E in AMERICA, and a die gouge to the left of the lower C in CENT. Cross-referenced as CONECA 6-O-VIII, Crawford CDDO-001, and Coppercoins 1960P-1DO-010, this variety is cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ WDDO-009. The abundance of die scratches on both sides provides multiple avenues for confirming attribution.
