Description

Distinguished by an extra eyelid visible below Lincoln's normal eyelid, WDDO-007 is among the most visually compelling doubled die obverse varieties on the 1960-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent. Eyelid doubling represents one of the finest-detail manifestations of hub doubling on the Lincoln portrait, as the delicate curvature of the eyelid amplifies even slight positional offset between hub impressions. The Wexler designation is 1960-D 1¢ WDDO-007. A small die gouge below and between the I and N of IN provides an obverse die marker, while the reverse exhibits a short vertical die gouge to the left of the bottom of the U in UNITED. No cross-references to other attribution catalogs are currently known. The Large Date obverse confirms this die was prepared using the original hub before the mid-year transition to the Small Date design. Collectors should examine Lincoln's eye area under at least 10x magnification, as the extra eyelid can be subtle on lightly struck or worn specimens. The combination of portrait doubling and clear die markers on both sides makes WDDO-007 a rewarding find for variety specialists working through 1960-D cents.
