1960-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002
Error
Description
Listed as the Large Date variant of 1960-D 1¢ WDDO-002, this entry documents the same doubled die obverse cataloged under the Small Date parent — a Class I clockwise spread on IGWT, the LIB of LIBERTY, and slightly on the date. It carries identical cross-references: CONECA 2-O-I, Crawford CDDO-002, and Coppercoins 1960D-1DO-004. The die markers match those of the Small Date listing across all stages. Stage A shows a short die scratch running SW from behind the ear and a scratch running NE from the top of the head toward the lower left W of WE. Stage B develops numerous SSW-to-NNE scratches in front of and behind the bust, plus a strong die scratch running SW from under the chin. Stage C adds a die chip in the lower R of LIBERTY. Reverse Stage A features two small die gouges between the upper I and C of AMERICA and a short scratch SW from under the right end of the Memorial. After a reverse die change at Stage B, a scratch runs SSW to NNE through the left Memorial base just left of the left post; Stage C continues the same reverse die. The dual listing under both Large Date and Small Date parents reflects the cataloging complexity introduced by the 1960 hub transition, where certain dies may have been classified differently by different attribution services depending on which hub characteristics they prioritized.
