Description

The 1960-D Jefferson Nickel WDDO-010 displays a spread toward the center on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, with the doubling increasing in visibility from left to right across the legend. The Wexler Variety ID is 1960-D 1¢ WDDO-010. The 1960-D is notable as a Small Date variety, a designation captured in the die markers for this entry. Die markers are documented on both sides. On the obverse, a die gouge is present south of the right side of the B in LIBERTY. A die scratch runs southeast from the bottom of the T in LIBERTY. A large die chip fills the inside of the 6 in the date. On the reverse, a die chip fills the lower S of PLURIBUS. A second die chip is present on the top of the O in ONE. The IGWT doubling increasing from left to right is a useful screening characteristic when searching through rolls or bulk lots, as it distinguishes this variety from other doubled die obverses in the 1960-D Jefferson Nickel population. Collectors should confirm the die chip inside the 6 alongside the legend doubling to strengthen the attribution.
