Description

Listed by the Wexler Team as 1960-D 1¢ WDDO-009, this Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date variety exhibits a spread toward the center on IGWT (IN GOD WE TRUST) — a convergent doubling pattern where the secondary hub impression shifted inward, pushing the doubled image of the motto toward the coin's center. The Small Date designation is significant because the 1960-D exists in both Large Date and Small Date varieties, with the Small Date being considerably scarcer and more valuable. Obverse die markers include parallel die scratches running northeast from the lower front of the vest to the left of the mint mark. The reverse carries extensive markers: a die chip under the left end of the center bar of the E in ONE, die chips on both the top and bottom of the O in ONE with a die crack running south from the O to a large rim cud, and a die break on the left side of the left Memorial base. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are known. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was designed by Frank Gasparro for the reverse, featuring the Lincoln Memorial with its detailed colonnade, while Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait continued unchanged. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1960 in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc at 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, the 1960-D Small Date variety is a key date within the Memorial Cent series. The extensive reverse die deterioration — including the cud at the O in ONE — documents a die approaching the end of its service life, and the combination of doubled die obverse with advanced reverse die failure creates a multi-feature variety of particular interest to specialists.
