Description

A distinctive extra eyelid below Jefferson's normal eyelid makes WDDO-007 of the 1960-D Jefferson Nickel one of the more visually engaging doubled die varieties in the series. The doubled hub impression created a second visible eyelid line beneath the primary one, producing a portrait anomaly that is immediately recognizable once located under magnification. This variety occurs on the Large Date obverse, as the 1960 Jefferson Nickel exists in both Large Date and Small Date varieties distinguished by the size and style of the date numerals. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge positioned below and between the I and N of IN, while the reverse carries a short vertical die gouge to the left of the bottom of the U in UNITED. Attributed by the Wexler Team as Wexler Variety ID 1960-D 1c WDDO-007, with no other known cross-references. The Denver Mint struck Jefferson Nickels alongside Philadelphia throughout the series. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, this 1960-D Large Date Jefferson Nickel documents hub doubling that manifests as a compelling extra eyelid on Jefferson's portrait, with confirming die gouges on both obverse and reverse.
