1960-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Two separate doubling directions appear on the obverse of this 1960-D Jefferson Nickel: a spread to the south on the 0 of the date, and a close counterclockwise spread on the E of WE. The Large Date designation applies to this variety, distinguishing it from the contemporaneous Small Date die pairs struck the same year at Denver. The 1960 Jefferson Nickel Large Date and Small Date distinction, well documented in the Lincoln cent series for that year, also appears in Jefferson Nickel production. Die Markers — Obverse: a short die gouge protrudes from the right side of the 9; a die scratch extends north from the top of the 1; parallel die scratches extend northwest from the upper left 1 and the upper left 9 in the date. Reverse: a vertical die scratch appears at the bottom of the second Memorial bay; two parallel die scratches extend southeast from the bottom of the Memorial above the O in ONE. Cross-referenced as Wexler 1960-D 1 cent WDDO-006 — note that the Wexler cross-reference records this as a cent denomination, though the parent coin is a Jefferson Nickel. No other cross-references are known.
