Error
Description
Originally reported by Delma K. Romines and once cataloged by CONECA as 1959 1c 4-O-II before receiving its current designation, WDDO-002 exhibits a Class II spread towards the rim visible on the letters of LIBERTY. Notched corners on the straight-edged letters of IN GOD WE TRUST provide an additional diagnostic. This variety is cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-II, Cherrypickers FS-01-1959-102 (022.3), Crawford CDDO-002, and Coppercoins 1959P-1DO-002. Three obverse die states have been documented: Stage A features a die scratch running ENE from the top of the Y in LIBERTY to the shoulder, several scratches running WNW to ESE between the upper G and O of GOD, and a die crack across the left base of the bust above the designer's initials. Stage B adds a short scratch running NW from the top of the shoulder, a scratch curving SE from the bottom of the bowtie, and a scratch through the left side of the 2nd 9. In Stage C, the shoulder and bowtie scratches have been abraded away while the scratch through the 2nd 9 remains. On the reverse, Stage A shows a small die gouge between the centers of the N and T of CENT, a horizontal scratch from the top of the O to the top of the N in ONE, and several scratches running SW from below the right post. Stage B matches Stage A, while Stage C introduces a strong scratch running SSE from the right cornice and two strong scratches running ENE from the lower right 2nd A of AMERICA.
