1959 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007
ErrorDescription
Like its sibling variety WDDO-006, this doubled die obverse is identified by an extra eyelid found just below Lincoln's normal eyelid on the obverse portrait. Carrying the Wexler designation 1959 1c WDDO-007, it was struck at Philadelphia during the transitional 1959 production year that introduced the Memorial cent design. While no cross-references to CONECA, Cherrypickers, or Crawford catalogs have been established, the variety is authenticated through its distinctive die markers. On the obverse, a die scratch arcs from west to east through the lower letters of GOD. The reverse exhibits numerous horizontal die scratches above the statue of Lincoln within the Memorial, a die scratch running ENE from the right roof to the bottom left of the E in AMERICA, and other scattered scratches throughout. The eyelid doubling on both WDDO-006 and WDDO-007 represents a type of hub doubling that particularly fascinates Lincoln cent specialists, as it appears on one of the most scrutinized elements of Brenner's portrait design.
