Description

Cataloged as WDDO-005 by the Wexler Team, this 1959 Philadelphia cent displays strong extra thickness on the date and LIBERTY, while lighter extra thickness appears across IN GOD WE TRUST. The inaugural year of the Lincoln Memorial reverse makes any doubled die from this date especially appealing to variety collectors building first-year sets. On the obverse, a small die gouge south of the left side of the E in LIBERTY serves as a reliable attribution marker. The reverse carries its own diagnostics: a small die gouge to the left of the lower N in UNITED and another die gouge inside the upper fifth Memorial bay. These die markers, combined with the bold spread on the date digits, make WDDO-005 straightforward to authenticate under moderate magnification. Among the 1959 doubled die obverse listings, this variety stands out for the clarity of its doubling on multiple design elements rather than being confined to a single area.
