1959-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011
ErrorDescription
Distinguished by two extra eyelids visible below Lincoln's normal eyelid, WDDO-011 ranks among the most visually compelling doubled die obverse varieties on the 1959-D Lincoln Memorial cent. The doubling also manifests inside the upper nine of the date, providing a secondary confirmation point for attribution. Cataloged as Wexler 1959-D 1¢ WDDO-011, this variety carries well-documented die markers on both sides. On the obverse, die scratches run south from the 19 in the date, and a die scratch runs northeast from the front of the vest to the left of the lower one in the date, with additional scratches found throughout the obverse surface. The reverse exhibits a die gouge to the right of the I in UNITED, along with large die chips on the top of and on the right side of the right cornice of the Memorial. The combination of dramatic portrait doubling on the eyelids and clear date doubling makes WDDO-011 particularly rewarding to locate, and the multiple die markers across both surfaces provide robust authentication points for collectors examining 1959-D cents under magnification.
