1959-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
ErrorDescription
Sharing the doubled eyelid characteristic common to several 1959-D cent varieties, WDDO-004 shows an extra eyelid just below the normal one, attributed by the Wexler Team. What sets this die apart is its advanced die state: two strong die cracks running west-southwest to east-northeast through the hair above the ear indicate significant die fatigue, alongside a small die gouge just to the right of the tip of the nose. These obverse diagnostics make WDDO-004 one of the more visually distinctive members of the 1959-D doubled eyelid group. The reverse contributes a die gouge to the left of the upper T in UNITED and a small die gouge above the designer's initials. Die cracks of this severity suggest a late die state, meaning fewer coins were struck from this die pair before retirement—a factor that can influence the variety's relative scarcity.
